Civilian shot during renewed clashes in western Libyan city
Armed clashes erupted between rival groups in Libya’s Al-Zawiya, leaving at least one civilian wounded after being shot in the head and raising security concerns in the western city, as reported by Libya Review on August 24th.
According to local reports, the fighting involved armed groups affiliated with Mohamed Bahroun, known as “Al-Far,” on one side and groups affiliated with Fares Al-Zintani and Hamza Al-Hudairi on the other side.
The cause of the most recent confrontation was not immediately clear, and there was no official information on casualties among the armed groups involved. Details surrounding the conditions of the wounded civilian were also not immediately available.
The clashes resulted in increased tension in areas of Al-Zawiya, with residents calling for an immediate end to the fighting and intervention by the authorities to prevent the violence from spreading. The incident has renewed concerns over the risks posed to civilians by armed confrontations inside of densely populated areas.
Stronger security measures have been repeatedly called for by the residents of Al-Zawiya as a way to prevent disputes between armed groups from escalating into fighting that threatens not only homes and infrastructure, but the lives of the residents.
Al-Zawiya, a major coastal city in western Libya with a major oil refinery, has experienced repeated violence at the hands of rival armed groups. Prior clashes have disrupted daily life and raised concerns surrounding the ability of the Government of National Unity to maintain security in the area while preventing renewed fighting.
The city is strategically important to Libya due to its major energy infrastructure, such as the Al-Zawiya refinery, which operates as one of the country’s most important fuel processing sites. Any prolonged deterioration in security would pose a threat and raise concern about the health and ability to sustain operations inside of the country’s energy sector.
The latest fighting comes at a time of broader security challenges in western Libya, where armed formations continue to demonstrate significant influence despite recent efforts aiming to unify and strengthen state security institutions.
