A new 370-kilometer road linking Egypt’s East Oweinat region with Libya’s Al-Kufra is expected to create a new major land route between the two countries and strengthen connectivity in Libya, as reported by Libya Review on August 26th.

The project is particularly important for Al-Kufra, which occupies a strategic position near Libya’s borders with Egypt, Sudan and Chad and could benefit from increased cross-border trade and transport activity.

Work on the first 100-kilometer section of the route includes the construction of an earth embankment and foundation layers. According to a progress update cited by Egyptian Authorities, since the starting of the project, around 50 kilometers of the earthworks have been completed.

The road could provide a shorter and more direct connection between Kufra and Egypt for Libya, which could allow for potentially supported movement of goods, agricultural products and other commodities. The project also forms part of a wider effort in improving road connectivity across Libya’s southern regions while strengthening the country’s links to its neighbouring countries.

It is important to note that Kufra plays a role as a valuable logistical centre in southeastern Libya. Its location gives it potential to serve as a transit point for trade moving between Libya, Egypt and other African markets.

The route would also support the development of logistics services and commercial activity in the area, while improving access to markets and border crossings. This project comes at a time where Libya continues to face major infrastructure and transport challenges due to long distance routes and limited road networks that prevent efficient trade and mobility.

Improved roadlinks with Egypt could prove to have wider economic significance for Kufra and its surrounding areas, particularly if accompanied by better border facilities and customs infrastructure.

The 370-kilometer route is ultimately expected to bear new strategic connection between Libya and Egypt, reinforcing Kufra’s role as a gateway for cross-border trade and transport throughout the region.
