Sudan: Military leader proposes plan for constitutional transition

Sudanese military leader, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, said that his country has proposed a potential “roadmap” for constitutional transition and the possibility of free elections.
According to AfricaNews on March 5th,the plan is set to include the establishment of a transitional government, the appointment of a civilian prime minister, as well as the facilitation of a national dialogue throughout civil society
An effective national dialogue will involve Sudan’s key factions and conflicting parties.
Sudan’s conflict began in April 2023, as rising tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into a full-blown war.
Meanwhile, the RSF are attempting to establish their own transitional constitution. On March 4th the RSF and Sudanese allied groups signed a transitional constitution that will bring the paramilitary group one step closer to establishing a parallel government in Sudan.
The idea of a parallel government in Sudan has generally been met with a negative reception from fellow African countries, including Egypt and Jordan.
However, Kenya has come under fire for supporting the RSF after they allowed the group to gather in Nairobi for the signing of a charter that would allow for the creation of a parallel government. Sudan described Kenya’s actions as “hostile.”
