Trafficker jailed in the Netherlands for torture of migrants in Libya
A Dutch court sentenced Eritrean human trafficker Amanuel Walid, also known as Tewelde Goitom, to 20 years in prison on January 27th for crimes linked to the torture of migrants in Libya, according to Libya Gazette.
The court ruled that the 42-year-old ran a smuggling route to Europe via Libya, detaining thousands of African migrants in camps and warehouses, and convicted him of membership of a criminal organisation, human trafficking and extortion.
The case was prosecuted under Dutch law, exercising universal jurisdiction, which allows courts to try foreign nationals for crimes committed abroad when victims are present in the Netherlands.
