Moroccan OCP firm gives fertilizer to Mauritanian farmers
Despite the possibility of a diplomatic fall out between Morocco and Mauritania after a former minister “warned” about the accidental drone attacks from the Moroccan army towards Mauritanians, relations appear to be more than cordial.
Morocco donated, on December 16th, 5,000 tonnes of fertilizer for the benefit of small Mauritanian farmers, as part of a major program to support African farmers, launched by the OCP Group, according to the French language daily L’Economiste.
“By facilitating access to suitable fertilizers, the OCP Group, through its subsidiary OCP Africa, is committed to supporting African farmers in order to contribute to feeding the populations of the continent, while improving the health of their soils and preserving the environment” the economical journal explained. “The fertilizers will be specifically intended for smallholder farmers who represent the majority of food producers in Mauritania and more than 90% of whom are dedicated to staple crops such as rice” it added.
This gesture was followed up by more assurances in Rabat that cooperation with its southern neighbour was “fruitful” according to the state-owned MAP.
The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, highlighted, on December 20th in Rabat, the fruitful cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania in the fields of energy, mining, environment and of sustainable development.
