Deadly earthquakes have struck Japan as 48 are feared dead with many more missing so far, according to Al Jazeera and other news outlets worldwide.

A powerful 7.6 quake took place in the country’s west coast on January 1 (16:00 local time) and it was reported that over 30 buildings collapsed in the town of Ishikawa.

36,000 households lost power in Ishikawa and Toyama and authorities are pumping out constant alerts, particularly to the residents of the nation’s western part and those residing at the border with South Korea.

The Asian superpower is prone to major natural disasters. In 2011 a deadly earthquake killed over 15,000 people. Their latest earthquake came in 2012.
