France’s Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne resigned from her post on January 8 as a cabinet reshuffle is expected, according to Le Monde and other news outlets worldwide.

Borne, who was appointed by the President in May 2022, had a couple of ministerial positions in the Macron government prior to her role. She was the Minister of Transport from 2017 to 2019 before becoming the Minister of Ecology from 2019 to 2020.

A reshuffle is in the pipeline ahead of key EU elections in May 2024. There are fears that Mr Macron’s government is drifting to the right which can be explained by concerns over far-right figurehead Marine Le Pen doing well in the next presidential elections. Recent polling suggests that she may even win.

Following the Prime Minister’s departure, President Macron said that she had shown, “courage, commitment and determination” during her stint.
