Following a cabinet meeting, government spokesperson, Mustafa Baytas said that the Moroccan government is ready to consider a petition which calls for halting normalization with Israel, according to Anadolu news agency.

But since going to press, Maghrebi has learnt that this statement might not be entirely sincere.

It’s not entirely clear where such petitions might come from, but human rights activists also publicized their plans to submit a petition demanding that the Moroccan government halt normalizing relations with Israel.

However, Maghrebi understands that the petition itself, on the day, was not allowed to be handed to the Prime Minister’s office, as those handing it in were blocked by a phalanx of police officers.

Morocco was the fourth Arab country to have normalized ties with Israel in 2020, after the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan.

It is through a petition that Moroccans can have the power to urge the government to adopt public policies or cancel agreements. According to the Moroccan law all submitted petitions are looked into by a government committee, who will either accept or reject the petition. Furthermore, the petition should be signed by a minimum of 5000 people to be considered.

From the 7th of October, Israel has pounded the Palestinian enclave since a cross-border attack by Hamas, a Palestinian group. According to local health authorities, at least 23, 357 Palestinians, most of them being women and children, were killed and 59, 410 others were injured.

About 1200 Israelis are believed to have been killed in the Hamas offensive.

However, since then, Haaretz revealed that the Israeli army’s helicopters and tanks were the ones that killed many of the 1139 soldiers and civilians that were claimed to have been killed by the ‘Palestinian Resistance.’

According to the UN, approximately 85 percent of Gazans have been displaced and are all faced with food insecurity. Hundreds of thousands of people are living without shelter and less than half of aid trucks are entering the territory before the start of the conflict.
