Algeria pushes Gaza ceasefire in UN Security Council
Algeria demands Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas through a UN Security Council draft, according to Reuters.
Taking after Morocco’s cautious and moderate stance towards Israel’s war in Gaza, Algeria submitted a draft to the UN Security Council on the 31st January, urging for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
In line with Morocco’s concern for the abidance of international law and condemnation of Israel’s civilian targeting, Algeria’s draft “rejects the forced displacement of Palestinian civilian population.”

Although Algeria’s proposal was shared amongst a 15 member council last Wednesday, it is uncertain whether the draft will actually be put to a vote.
Any resolution draft requires at least nine favourable votes without any veto’s from either Britain, Russia, France, China, and the United States.
Despite 153 states of the UN General Assembly voting in favour of a ceasefire in early December, the US vetoed the move as it believed that a ceasefire would only benefit the Hamas militants.
