Morocco: confiscation of cannabis from fishing vessel

Moroccan police confiscated 10.5 metric tonnes of cannabis resin from a fishing boat in Agadir, resulting in the arrest of 13 suspects, according to the Arab Weekly and agencies, on March 17th.

A police statement indicated that investigations into possible ties with international drug trafficking networks are still underway.

In the previous year, Moroccan law enforcement documented and processed 99,513 cases associated with drug trafficking, leading to the arrest of 130,212 individuals involved in drug-related crimes.

Since 2021, Morocco, a significant cannabis producer, has permitted the cultivation, export, and utilization of cannabis for medicinal or industrial purposes but not for recreational use.

During anti-drug trafficking operations last year, Moroccan police seized 81 tonnes and 175 kilograms of cannabis. This marked a 17 percent decrease compared to the previous year.

Last year, police seized nearly two tonnes of cocaine. Additionally, they confiscated six kilograms and 880 grams of heroin.

Meanwhile, Moroccan security services intercepted shipments of psychotropic substances. These shipments amounted to 1.2 million tablets, including various types of ecstasy.
