Tunisian coast guard recovers bodies of 13 migrants

As reported by Reuters on April 7th, the Tunisian coast guard has announced the retrieval of the 13 migrant bodies. The National Guard also announced that 1867 migrants were also rescued in a variety of recent incidents in the Mediterranean.

Tunisia has been at the epicenter of the European Union’s efforts to manage migration flows. Recently, the EU announced a €165 million deal with the North African country which includes training and equipment for the National Maritime Guard.

The improvement in the weather in recent weeks has increased the departures of migrant boats from the Tunisian coast. These frequent crossings have resulted in the EU aiming to adopt a policy of border externalization, pumping funds to Tunisia as well as recently to Egypt, in an attempt to minimize the number of arrivals on Europe’s shores.
