Mauritanian president Mohamed Ould Ghazouani announced on April 24th that he will run for a second presidential term, reports The Arab Weekly plus agencies.

The first round of the presidential election will take place on June 29th, with the second round running on July 14th.

Ghazouani, 67, is the clear favourite in the polls after providing the West African country stability in the Sahel region since 2019. His Insaf party won a landslide victory in legislative elections during 2023, taking 107 of the 176 seats in the National Assembly.

Ghazouani’s opponent, well-known anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Ould Abeid, who was runner-up in the last presidential election, also announced his candidacy on June 24th.
