Algerian separatist group MAK meets top UK officials

A number of London based media outlets covering the Middle East are reporting that the Algerian separatist movement MAK recently held high level meetings with top UK government figures, following a similar trip made earlier in the US aimed at raising its profile.

According to reports, the meeting on the 6th June between MAK leader, Fermat Mehenni, Pro-Israel Polak and other Tory Parliamentarians was a step towards gaining international recognition for the Movement for Self-Determination of Kabylia, and Kabylia as an independent state, the Middle East Monitor reported.

While Mehenni was “impressed with [the Lords and Ladies] openness and attentiveness which truly matched the greatness of the United Kingdom.”, Britain continues to supply Israel with military equipment and arms to use in the eradication of Gaza’s Palestinian population.

“I was fascinated to hear of the struggle of the President and the Kabyle people to maintain their culture and identity. Far too often we overlook those who face persecution as a minority. I for one will be looking to ensure their voice is heard within the UK.”, the 35-year-loyal Conservative Friends of Israel member stated.

The former chief of staff to British PM, Boris Johnson, Eddie Udny-Lister said that he was “ashamed that this was a dispute I had no knowledge of.”

The culture of the Kabyle has been suffocated by the hands of Algeria’s government and the MAK intend to revive the communities being and reclaim the freedoms the colonial fait accompli took from them.

Algeria labelled the MAK a “terrorist organisation” in 2021, yet simultaneously claimed that the country had “defeated terrorism” in the same year.

Although Mehenni has so far received positive responses from UK and US politicians since his announcement of the rebirth of Kabylia on 20th April, the US may not want to risk pushing Algeria further into Russia’s arms.

An exclusive interview with MAK member and lawyer, Elisabeth Myers details more about the MAK in Algeria.
