Lebanon’s central bank chief finally arrested

Lebanon’s former central bank governor, Riad Salameh, was arrested on September 3rd a senior judicial source told Reuters.

He is being investigated in Lebanon and at least five EU countries for allegedly taking hundreds of millions of dollars from Lebanon’s central bank, accusations he denies.

Salameh was Lebanon’s central bank governor for 30 years until July 2023.

Salameh has been charged with financial crimes including money-laundering, embezzlement and illicit enrichment although this latest arrest is a new dossier which relates to a local company that he dealings with.
