Algeria has officially ended its efforts to join the BRICS intergovernmental group, although it is a member of the BRICS development bank, according to Middle East Monitor via El Moudjahid, citing government sources.

This follows speculation that BRICS member states had been in contact with Algeria over potential membership of the group. However, El Moudjahid quoted officials stating that the “BRICS membership file is closed for the Algerian authorities.”

Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria’s President, had already confirmed Algeria would not continue to seek BRICS membersip following its exclusion from the 2023 summit in South Africa, where six new members joined. Algeria’s government said the exclusion was without reason, and the newspaper criticized the BRICS group for “absurd selection logic” and a failure to be more inclusive.

Algeria does however remain committed to its role in the global economic framework and multilateral co-operation. “Algeria has definitively turned the page” on BRICS membership, the report said, while the country continues to advocate for a multipolar international order through other forums like the UN Security Council and the Non-Aligned Movement.

The country as just last month admitted into the BRICS development bank, which strengthened its ties with the group economically. The membership allows Algeria to collaborate on development projects in emerging markets, even though it is not a fully integrated member of BRICS.
