31 people have been killed in a military air strike on a mosque in the central Sudanese city of Wad Madani on the evening of October 20 according to Africa News and agencies

According to the Sudan Tribune, the military air strike was carried out following reports of a spate of RSF attacks carried out across the state of Al-Jazira, just south of the capital city Khartoum.

The Wad Madani Resistance (WMR) Committee, one of several volunteer organisations providing humanitarian aid in war-ravaged Sudan, issued a statement on Tuesday detailing the attack.

The group accused the military of using “barrel bombs” while going on to describe that more than half of the victims have yet to be identified, as rescue teams continue to sieve through the remains of “dozens of charred and mutilated bodies.”

“Military aircraft bombed the Sheikh El Jeili mosque and its surroundings in the western extension neighbourhood with barrel bombs after evening prayer,” the WMR Committees statement said.

Since April 2023 Sudan has been devasted by the brutal conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with some reports claiming up to 150,000 people have been killed. The two sides are battling for control over the AL-Jazira state which has been under RSF control since late 2023.

The Sudanese army recently recaptured the city of Al Suki in southeastern Sennar state on October 24th, consolidating gains in its fight against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The advance comes less than 24 hours after the army seized control of Al Dinder, a strategically important locality linking Sennar and Gedaref states in eastern Sudan.
