Algerian President Tebboune makes historic visit to Mauritania
Abdelmadjid Tebboune arrived in Mauritania on December 9th, marking the first time an Algerian president has stood on Mauritanian soil in 37 years, according to MiddleEastMonitor.
Tebboune is scheduled to join an two-day international conference on education and youth employment in Africa, alongside other African leaders.
Algerian President Chadli Benjedid was the last president to visit Mauritania in 1987, when he attended the opening ceremony for an oil refinery built with Algerian support.
Earlier in the year, the two countries opened their first land crossing along the 460km stretch of their shared border – a 700km road linking the Mauritanian city of Zouerat to Tindouf in south-west Algeria.
