Russian cargo plane departs Syria for Libya, says official
A Russian cargo plane flew from Russia’s air base in the Syrian port city of Latakia to Libya on December 14th, a Syrian security official stationed outside the facility said according to Reuters. This follows the toppling of Bashar al-Assad, a close ally of Russia, last weekend.
The official told Reuters that it was expected that additional Russian planes would depart from the Hmeimim air base in Syria’s coastal Latakia province in the coming days.
Moscow has said it hopes to maintain both the Hmeimim air base at Latakia and naval base in Tartous, both in Syria, to keep up efforts against what it called international terrorism.
