Morocco to double airport capacity for 2030 World Cup
Morocco plans to more than double its airport capacity by 2030, as the North African nation prepares to co-host the Football World Cup with Spain and Portugal.
According to Reuters via TheArabWeekly on December 17th, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announced the expansion of the nation’s 38 million airport passenger capacity to 80 million in a major travel overhaul.
As the country’s tourist industry goes from strength to strength, boasting a recording 15.9 million visitors in the first 11 months of 2024, it is hoped the new development will coax numbers to continue their swell.
Other infrastructure is set for a major boost, with Morocco’s rail network aiming to double the number of connected cities by 2040, alongside a $500m investment in stadium construction and refurbishment for the international tournament.
