The US has pledged another $200m of aid to Sudan, as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis continues to grow more bleak.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat and Agencies, the announcement was made on December 19th by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, bringing Washington’s total relief to $2.3bn.

The 20 month long civil war in Sudan has displaced more than 8 million people according to the International Rescue Committee, with 1.7 million people facing famine or at risk of famine.

However, at a recent UN Security Council meeting, United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) operations director Edem Wosornu said $4.2bn would be needed next year.

“The volume of humanitarian aid reaching people in need remains a fraction of what is required,” she said.

“Ultimately, the only way to end this cycle of violence, death and destruction is for this Council to rise to the challenge of delivering lasting peace in Sudan.”
