Over 700 people had been killed in the Sudanese state of al-Fashir in North Darfur since the Rapid Support Force (RSF) militia began a siege of the city in May.

This is according to UN human rights chief Volker Türk, who said in a statement on December 20th that “this alarming situation cannot continue. The Rapid Support Forces must end this horrible siege,” as reported by Reuters.

The UN rights office said it had documented at least 782 civilian deaths and over 1,143 injured since May, citing evidence based in part on interviews with people who had fled the area. It said casualties came amid regular RSF shelling of densely populated residential areas as well as airstrikes by the Sudanese Armed Forces.
