US fighter jet shot down over Red Sea in apparent friendly fire
A US navy ship mistakenly shot down an American fighter jet over the Red Sea early on December 22nd, according to the US military’s central command, which described it as an apparent case of friendly fire.
The New York Times says the two pilots were recovered safely after they ejected from their F/A-18 aircraft, with one suffering minor injuries, according to a statement from central command. It added that an investigation is underway.
The jet had flown off the USS Harry S. Truman carrier group. Central command said on December 15th that the group had been deployed to its area of responsibility, with includes Yemen and surrounding waters, but didn’t specify where the group was located.
