Sudan rebels retake key base in North Darfur

Sudan’s rebel group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have retaken a key logistical base in North Darfur, ensuring their continued military efforts in the region.
According to TheArabWeekly and Agencies, the RSF claimed control of the al-Zurug base on December 22nd, one day after the Sudanese army and allied Joint Forces, a conglomerate of former rebel groups, announced their occupation of the position.
Analysts say the fighting to could further inflame the rivalry between the Arab tribes that form the base of the RSF, and the non-Arab Zaghawa tribe, the main component of the Joint Forces.
The tension between the RSF and Sudan’s government forces boiled over in April 2023 into a civil war, with the most intense fighting occurring in North Darfur.
