Egypt completes trial run of Suez Canal extension
Egypt said on December 28th it had successfully tested a new 10km channel near the southern end of the Suez Canal, according to Reuters.
This comes even as Egyptian revenue from the waterway has plunged since the Ansar Allah group in Yemen, also called the Houthis began attacking vessels in the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
During a trial run two ships passed through a new stretch of the canal’s two-way section without incident, according to a statement by the Suez Canal authority.
