1,316 people have died, following an outbreak of cholera in Sudan early in August 2024, reports Anadolu Agency.

This further follows detection of famine in parts of the country.

Sudan’s Health Ministry confirmed this to be true on Tuesday 31st December, alongside a confirmation of the total number of cases in the country to be around 49,554, with the stated figure of 1,316 mortalities to have taken place since 12th August.

Alongside displacement and famine caused by the current civil war between the Rapid Support Forces and Sudan’s national army, the situation has been exacerbated by heavy rainfall and flooding that began in June, worsening living conditions for people in Sudan.

This news follows an October report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) that 3.4 million Sudanese children were at risk of contracting epidemic diseases, and a worsening UN backed evaluation that 50% of the country was at high risk of famine.

On Oct. 5, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that it had sent 1.4 million doses of vaccines to combat the spread of cholera in Sudan.

Children are most at risk, both of falling victim to famine, and to infectious disease. The 2 year-long conflict between the RSF and the army has greatly reduced the quality of life for people in Sudan.
