Former Malian PM Choguel Maïga accused of embezzlement
Choguel Maïga, who was Mali’s Prime Minister from 2021 until his firing two months ago, has been accused of embezzlement by the body which controls public spending, according to RFI.
The former PM is accused of covering up incidents of embezzlement or benefitting from them in a report by the authority. The auditor says there was ‘’undue expenditure on staff’’ over the period of 2020 to 2023, on phone subscriptions, WiFi and computers that was meant for use in schools.
Maïga was fired last November after comments which criticised the ruling junta’s lack of clarity regarding a promised transition back to democracy. He has not commented on the embezzlement allegations, but said he had a ‘clear conscience’ when the auditor began research for the report.
