Sudan cholera outbreak kills 1,316 since August 12
Approximately 1,316 Sudanese people have died from cholera since the disease’s outbreak in Sudan since the initial outbreak on August 12.
According to Anadolu Agency and Middle East Monitor, Sudan’s health ministry stated on December 31, 2024 that the total number of cases in Sudan reached 49,554.
Seasonal flooding and rains in June have contributed to the spread of the disease.
This is especially problematic in war-torn Sudan, as the health care system is overwhelmed and not able to function effectively, making the treatment of many new cholera cases fairly difficult for health services to manage.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated on October 1 that 3.4 million Sudanese children are at risk of contracting these preventable diseases.
A few days after OCHA`s report, UNICEF sent 1.4 million doses of cholera vaccine to Sudan.
