Syria’s school curriculum changes spark national concerns
The Syrian government’s attempt to change the national school curriculum has sparked a nationwide outcry, as critics have said that the changes would introduce a more Islamic bearing within education while excluding references to the Assad era, as reported by The National on January 3rd.
The Facebook page of the new government’s education ministry has posted the proposed alterations for all age groups. This includes interpreting a Quranic verse about those who angered god and went astray, as being about “jews and Nasara.” Nasara is often used as an offensive term for Christians.
The changes also include dropping poetry which celebrates the subject of love and women and removing a chapter on “the origins and evolution of life.”
