Malian army and Russian fighters accused of killing nine civilians
A civil society group and a rebel coalition accused the Malian army and Russian contractors of killing nine civilians including women and children in an attack on a vehicle in Mali’s Segou region last week, according to Reuters on January 5th
Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, spokesperson for the coalition of Tuareg groups fighting for a homeland in the north of Mali, said the vehicle was travelling from the town of Niono to a refugee camp in Mauritania on January 2nd when it came under fire.
He and Kal Akal, a local civil society association, said Malian forces and fighters from Russia’s Wagner private military contractor group had carried out the attack. The head of Kel Ansar called for an investigation but said Malian troops were not behind the killings.
