At least 101 fighters have been killed in northern Syria during the past couple of days as fighting between Turkish-backed forces and Syrian Kurdish fighters, a war monitor reports.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on January 5th that 85 Turkey-backed fighters and 16 fighters from the Kurdish-run Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were killed in the fight, which started in the evening of January 3rd in a number of villages around the city of Manbij, the Middle East Eye reports.

Backed by the US, the SDF, said in a statement that it had fended off all attacks by fighters who were supported by Turkish air strikes.

The fighting started after Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) recommenced its military campaign on the SDF, which concurred with a rebel campaign that drove out Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in November.
