Syria’s justice minister is under scrutiny over videos showing him overseeing executions. The Syrian people have asked for transparency and accountability on the government’s policies for the future, the Middle East Eye reported on January 5th.

The country’s interim justice minister, Shadi al-Waisi, has been scrutinized as old videos have reemerged, where he is reportedly reading execution sentences in Idlib, northwest Syria.

The videos have been verified by the fact-checking network Verify-sy, and reportedly show him reading the execution sentences of two women, who were charged in 2015 for “corruption and prostitution.”

Verify-sy said in a statement: “The platform Verify-sy conducted a thorough verification process using specialised technical tools to match the features and tone of voice clearly heard in at least one of the videos, with the features and voice of [Justice] Minister Shadi al-Waisi, who had recently appeared in several filmed interviews.”
