US President Joe Biden’s administration will shift $95m in military aid that was assigned for Egypt to Lebanon, according to a document seen by Reuters on January 6th.

The US State Department’s notification to Congress of the planned diversion refers to the Lebanese armed forces as “a key partner” in sustaining the November 27th 2024 Israel-Lebanon agreement to end hostilities and to stop Hezbollah from threatening Israel.

The decision has taken place after some Democrats in Congress have conveyed strong concerns about Egypt’s human rights records, especially the arrests of many political prisoners.

The State Department and the Egyptian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to requests for comments, Reuters reports.
