Mozambique opposition leader Venancio Mondlane has returned to his country, with violence erupting between police and protesters, who had gathered at the airport for his arrival.

According to AP on January 9th, Mondlane was seen leaving a plane at Mavalane International Airport in the capital Maputo as security forces fired tear gas at his supporters.

Mondlane left Mozambique in October citing fears for his life, following a disputed election which placed him second in the presidential race.
