The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has delivered 700 tons of aid to Somalia, as severe drought blights the Horn of Africa.

According to MiddleEastMonitor on January 8th, Somalia Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) said: “Three hundred tons have been allocated to Kismayo in Jubaland State, while 200 tons are designated for Garowe in Puntland State, located in the north-east.”

The aid comes as UAE military involvement has grown over the last few years, as the Somalian government wages a large military offensive against al-Qaeda–affiliated jihadist group Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahedin (al-Shabab), which controls swaths of southern and central Somalia, according to the WashingtonInstitute.
