Sudan changes banknotes in move that prompts criticism
Sudan has introduced new banknotes to compel people to open bank accounts has to boost bank deposits and with them the army’s war effort, according to finance minister Jibril Ibrahim via Reuters on January 10th.
Some critics however say the move has excluded millions from the financial system. Sudan’s economy has been raved by the almost-two year war against the RSF militia, and half the country has been driven into hunger.
Ibrahim said the initiative launched last month with the goal of making funds looted by the RSF worthless had been successful, while critics say the move excludes the millions who remain in RSF-controlled areas from the financial sector and renders their savings useless, in effect splitting the country.
