Sudanese army retakes Wad Madani from RSF militia

Sudan’s army said on January 11th that it was pushing out the rival the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia from the city of Wad Madani, a step which if completed successfully would be its biggest gain in the nearly two-year civil war, Reuters reported.
The army posted a video appearing to show troops inside Wad Madani, capital of El Gezira state, an agricultural and trading hub that the RSF have controlled since December 2023, in what could represent a turning point in the war.
“The leadership of the Armed Forces congratulates our people on the entry of our forces into Wad Madani this morning. They are now working to clean up the remaining rebel pockets inside the city,” a statement by the army said.
