Nigeria: Military kills 16 civilians in air strike blunder
At least 16 civilians have been killed in Nigeria after the government air force mistook them for criminal gangs in the country’s north-western Zamfara State.
According to BBCNews on January 13th, government airstrikes targeted militant gangs, notorious for kidnapping people for ransom, but instead killed local vigilante groups and civilians defending themselves.
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) said: “While the operation successfully eliminated several bandits and led to the recovery of some kidnap victims, the NAF views with grave concern reports of the loss of civilian lives in the course of the operation.”
