Mozambique opens new parliament amid party boycott
Mozambique’s new parliament was sworn in on January 13th, as opposition led protests left the capital city of Maputo a ghost town.
According to Al-Jazeera, around 30 seats were vacant on the opening day, boycotted by parties Renamo and MDM, who are demanding a recount of election votes.
Leader of the opposition, Venancio Mondlane, arrived back in the country on January 9th, claiming the October elections were rigged by incoming president Daniel Chapo and his Frelimo party, who have been in the hot seat for 50 years.
