At least 100 miners have died in an illegal gold mine in North West province of South Africa, after being trapped underground for months, according to AP on January 13th.

A miners union told AP that another 500 others are still trapped, with gruesome videos from cellphones sent to the surface of dozens of bodies wrapped in plastic.

While the police launched an operation in the November to get them out, they initially cut off the miner’s food supply in an attempt to force them out, a strategy slammed by mining unions.
