The number of irregular border crossings into the European Union fell significantly in 2024, as increasing cooperation between countries helped cracked down on smuggling networks.

According to AfricaNews on January 15th, crossings were down 38% compared with 2023, being the lowest number since 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic reduced migration.

Despite the major decrease, immigration problems still exist, with the new dangerous sea crossing to the Canary Islands claiming many lives this year.
