Moroccan earthquake activist jailed in controversial trial
A Moroccan activist who was critical of the government’s earthquake response has been sentenced to prison, in a trial that human rights advocates condemned as politically motivated.
According to AP on January 14th, the 32-year-old activist group leader, Said Ait Mahdi, was given three months behind bars and ordered to pay $1,000, after charges of defamation, assault and inciting unauthorized demonstration were leveled against him.
The earthquake in September 2023 left 3,000 people dead, with victims near the epicentre angered by the government’s slow response to the natural disaster and the lack of aid, according to News Central TV.
