US sanctions head of Sudanese army over civilian deaths

The US treasury department said the US government had imposed sanctions on the head of Sudan’s army and de facto president, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on January 16th, the BBC reported.
The US accused Gen Burhan of “destabilizing Sudan and undermining the goal of a democratic transition” in a brief statement on the matter.
The US sanctioned Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, the head of the group fighting the army, on January 7th, and accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia which he leads of committing genocide.
