Congo: Chinese nationals jailed for illegal gold mining
Three Chinese nationals have been sentenced to seven years in prison in Democratic Republic of Congo amid a major crackdown on illegal gold mining.
According to VOA, a court in the Congo’s eastern city of Bukavu sentenced them on January 14th after the suspects were found in possession of $400,000 in cash and a substantial amount of gold a few days earlier.
The governor of South Kivu province, where the criminals were arrested, Jean Jacque Purusi said: “This is only one-tenth of what they have already taken from us. We will not let it go. This is the wealth of the people of South Kivu. We are determined to go all the way because enough is enough.”
