Egypt’s Sisi hosts Libya’s Haftar for first time since 2021
Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi hosted Libya’s Khalifa Haftar, the military leader who controls the east of the country, on January 18th. The meeting, reported by The New Arab, is the first between the two since September 2021.
Sisi’s office said he stressed in the talks Egypt’s commitment to “ensuring the unity and cohesion of Libya’s national institutions” and urged “coordination between all Libyan parties to crystallise a comprehensive political roadmap” towards parliamentary and presidential elections.
Haftar’s last visit to Cairo in 2021 was few months before parliamentary and presidential elections in Libya that were delayed due to disagreements over their legal framework.
