Mozambique’s former finance minister will serve another two and half years behind bars for his part in the “tuna bond” scandal that plunged his home nation into a financial crisis.

According to AP on January 17, Manuel Chang, 69, was convicted last year of receiving bribes for clandestinely agreeing to $2bn in loans from major overseas banks, making Mozambique liable for repayment.

A federal judge in New York increased his sentence from six years to eight and a half, with Chang saying: “I deeply regret the damage I have caused.”
