Togo’s foreign minister has hinted that Togo may join the new Alliance of Sahel States (AES) as the major geopolitical realignment of the Sahel region continues.

According to Africa News on January 17th, minister Robert Dussey said membership in the new bloc is “the decision of the President of the Republic”, though “not impossible.”

The AES was established by Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, who all left West African economic union of ECOWAS in December to pursue their own grouping, according to the BBC.
