Canadian mining firm to continue operating in Mali
Canadian mining firm B2Gold said it will $10 million in exploration at the Fekola gold complex in Mali in 2025 after a settlement with the government over its mining code reduced the risk of disruption, according to Reuters on January 22nd
The new code was introduced by Mali in August 2023, as other junta-led governments in West Africa have done. The code gives the state a bigger share of revenues from mining and removes tax exemptions for mining companies.
B2Gold was one of the earliest companies to negotiate a settlement with Mali over the new code, settling an income tax demand last September and agreeing to move part of its exploration to the new regulations. Fekola has both a producing mine and an ongoing exploration.
