The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) called on January 25th for a halt to attacks on healthcare workers and facilities in Sudan after a drone attack on a hospital in the country’s North Darfur region that killed over 70 people and wounded dozens, reported Reuters.

“As the only functional hospital in El Fasher, the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital provides services which include gyn-obstetrics, internal medicine, surgery and pediatrics, along with a nutrition stabilization centre,” WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X after the strike on January 24th.

“The appalling attack on Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, Sudan, led to 19 injuries and 70 deaths among patients and companions,” Ghebreyesus wrote. “At the time of the attack, the hospital was packed with patients receiving care.”
