Libyan authorities “crushing” civic space says watchdog
Free speech in Libya has all but gone, as unaccountable militias and a litany of draconian legacy laws continue to diminish civic space.
According to Human Rights Watch on January 27th, Libyan authorities are accelerating their targeting of activists and NGO’s, risking the complete annihilation of the right to free assembly and association.
Hanan Salah, associate Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch, said: “Libyan authorities need to urgently end their repressive policies, which are crushing civic space in the country and have made it near-impossible for organizations to carry out their vital work.”
