Tunisia: Debates to legalise forced deportation of migrants
In what could be the Tunisian government’s most anti-immigration move yet, lawmakers are debating whether to legalise the deportation of “irregular migrants.”
According to The New Arab on January 27th, the bill would permit the deportation of migrants to their home country, with exemptions for asylum seekers threatened with torture or inhumane treatment back home.
The Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights has attacked the proposals as unethical and contradictory, accusing Kais Saied’s government of attempting to formalise its current quasi-legal forced deportations, amid its arrangements with Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni.
